i went to whitmore library today and got some books on tape to listen to while i'm at work. i found a cd of a local band called "the devil whale" that alison vance introduced me to. i love their music, and i love driving with my windows down to do it.

capitol reef

i went to capitol reef last weekend and it was amazing! i had never been there before. whoops...i didn't take any pictures, but it was google does the trick. all the camp sites were full because of memorial day so we just pulled off the side of the road and set up camp. we gathered some trees and rocks and made a fire pit and set up our tents. i was anti-tent, because i prefer the open-air and stars, but i ended up being really grateful for it. we slept through some hefty winds that almost blew our tent off the ground wizard of oz-style and woke up to 36 degree air. we did a way fun hike (walk) and trekked through a river along the way. can't hate the great outdoors.

mustaches and bowties

two nights in a row i went to some killa parties. on saturday we attended a mustache party and on sunday we threw a bow-tie party. themed potluck couldn't go wrong. my new friend miles made some amazing bow tie pasta and i, with grandma's help, made some bow-tie hors d'oeuvres (use your imagination because i didn't take a picture). we laid two leaves of spinach topped with some mandarin oranges side by side and wrapped the middle with a piece of swiss cheese. it was delightful...and everyone wore bow ties. i already had one...but i made the one below for miles. notice his name embroidered on the back. i sewed the whole thing by hand...oh the joys of summer.

i was tending my nephew otie. we went to ikea. i was buying couches for work. so i gave otie the car keys and let him sit in the front seat to distract him while i loaded all the furniture in the back of mom's suburban. he's not even two years old yet, mind you. so i closed the back door and went to grab otie out of the front seat...

and...it was locked. otie had the keys, and my purse, and my cell phone...

he knows what a button is, and he understands "lock" just not "UNlock." so i would point to the buttons and ask him to unlock the door, and he pushed every single one except unlock.

he thought it was a really fun game. he would kiss me through the window and was just beaming with power. then he found my deodorant. he took off the lid and started rubbing it in his armpits over his clothes, but that got boring fast so he decided to rub it on his tongue instead. at this point i was banging on the window telling him "no" and to stop biting into my deodorant. he would just laugh and then get the keys again and dangle them in my face. he was just glowing because of the time he got to spend in the driver's seat, a rare occasion, because he turns neurotic when it's time for the car seat again.

after about ten minutes, i darted into ikea and called 9-1-1 for the first time that wasn't a prank (whoopsie, i had a naughty childhood). i figured if i couldn't get him out, kidnappers couldn't either. i was still scared to leave him nevertheless.

i was pretty calm and it wasn't that scary...until he turned the car on. he is the smartest little thing. he turned the keys and i could hear the car beeping. that's when i started to have a panic attack. he put all his body weight on the shifter, trying to pull it into gear (i am not kidding.) good thing he wasn't quite strong enough and didn't know the angle you had to pull it to actually shift from park.

i had a grocery cart ready to smash the window in to save my little man, but then the firemen pulled up...thanks for letting me borrow your car dad!

after a huge full-size-lights-flashing-fire truck, 6 firemen, a frantic aunt, and a laughing toddler who loved all the attention, we hijacked the car and got the door unlocked and all left the scene alive, and uninjured.

this week marks my 14th baptism & confirmation anniversary. I’ve been thinking aoubt it all week. i was baptized on February 3, 1996, a saturday, and confirmed in sacrament meeting the next day on February 4.

i remember my sisters throwing a party for me to celebrate the first day i fasted, after becoming an official member of the church. i'm glad they made it seem cool...because considering my previous post...i wouldn't naturally think going without food was that cool.

hmmm...i've had an interesting day. a great day. my mom came down and slept over at my apartment. i loved it because it was like i was a kid again when i used to beg her to sleep in the backyard with me.

on another note i had to give a speech in my Media History & philosophy class today. the topic was technology and media. it was very interesting.i had two different professors and my mother reference the CES fireside talk by David A. Bednar today. i think it's time to re-read it again. i tend to take like coincidences as signs.

the real reason i decided to make this post though...is that i love grapefruit. i feel like i have an affinity for foods that most people don't like...and i don't like a few staples that most people do. i'm a weird cat. but grapefruit is one of my favorites. mmmmm...
my favorite fruit used to be blackberries, but it's a close call between the two. i happen to have both in my fridge right now. blackberries are on sale at costco for $4 something for a huge box and 2 for $5 at macey's for little cartons. fyi.

i ended my day with another of favorite treats...DEL TACO CHURROS and hot chocolate.

i, like my sisters, have a tendency to talk and think about food A LOT. sometimes i can't sleep because i'm so excited to eat breakfast in the morning.

let me post to you a secret treat recipe that i'm into right now:
plain yogurt+honey+blackberries

it is divine...my roommate told me about it (she does it with grapes) and i thought she was weird. but i decided to "try before i sigh" - which i suggest you do the same.

now that i think of it---it was my favorite treat in london! how weird i didn't make the connection before. when i went to london the thanksgiving before last, i took a picture of it. i think it's my google profile picture.

here it is! oh an it looks like there was coconut on there.

i live to eat. obviously. i went to town at the grocery store today.

two weeks ago i went to virginia for martin luther king day!

i decided to get a ticket on tuesday and i flew out thursday night after classes! i used some of my miles so it wasn't too expensive.

since they couldn't come home for christmas, it was fun to have them here. we went to the potomac mills mall, ate a lot of delicious food, and played with the kids.

heidi welcomed me to her home with these delicious cordon blue rolls

heidi demanded that we cooked dessert every night...and i obliged because i didn't want to make her feel bad. hahaha

my favorite was when we were laying in heidi's bed and he jumped and threw his arms around me and yelled "i love you bets."

vegetarianistic thoughts

*warning! relatively graphic post. beware!*

i'm sick today and i'm trying to get well asap. i don't like being sick and i don't like doing nothing.
i aborted my regular routine and woke up and stayed in bed doing homework until i went to my biology class. i skipped my swimming class and came straight home to absorb the nothingness in my schedule. i've been forcing myself to stay home to get well so i don't prolong any unnecessary systems.
fyi,"nothing"= school and home-y things.
while nothing was getting boring i decided to cook a chicken. a whole one. i've never cooked a whole animal all by myself before. i felt accomplished for cooking something i've never cooked myself before.
it came out of the oven two and a half hours later. i had to peel the skin and pull all the meat off the bones. i didn't like it. i felt guily. i didn't like seeing the bones of the poor animal that died because selfish me wanted a bite to eat.
the worst part was when i accidentally broke the coccyx and opened up my hand and recognized which bone it was. i didn't know chickens had coccyces, or maybe i had never thought about it before. i have one too. similar feelings with the feet and rib cage. i'm such a baby.
i'm not going to convert to vegetarianism because i believe in moderation in all things, but i think have more vegetarian thoughts than the average person.
i hope that i can be more moderate in my eating habits, especially because of those little things who have to die for my satiary benefit.
p.s. does this remind anyone of the "fruitarian" on notting hill who cries while explaining that everything that grows has feelings?
...at least my thoughts aren't that crazy.

My grandma went into closet artist mode while her kids were growing up. She just came out a few years ago and has been painting ever since. We celebrated her 78^th birthday in August by having an art show. We gathered up all her pieces and put them on display. It was a huge success. The food was wonderful, the art was amazing and the company was gracious. Thanks to my dear friend Kristen Moore for being our photographer. (There are only a few pics here.)

virginia is for lovers...august 2009

my sister told me it's lame to blog about stuff that was months ago...

but she is not a completist, and i am. so i am going to finish what i started with the recap of summer and semester.

so from D.C. i took a bus down to richmond, virginia to see my dear sister heidi and her new abode on the east coast. heidi picked me up in the middle of the richmond hood late at night and we started our fun right then and there.

i loved being with my baby niece sadie louise...she smiles quite a big

we visited matt's bunk bed at the VCU hospital where he's doing his oral surgery residency...and where he lives 90% of the time

i brought the babies in bed with me while heidi went to the YMCA in the morning

there's nothing better than auntie bets

there's no better time to visit your family than when they need help moving in

ha ha

so i decided to help her fix her kitchen

someone needed to get rid of the navy & plaid

so...

we primed the table

and re-upholstered the chairs

{something you may not know about me: i like to take things apart}

and painted the table black

and said hello to black & damask

i made popsicles with owen

and discovered who had been taking random pictures with my camera

{owen's cute toes are pretty good evidence}

my family and i went to the beach for thanksgiving...it was one of my most favorites as i said in a previous post.

quite an ugly sunset when you compare it to this beaut

{few things can beat a seaside sunset}

we went to ruby's diner at the end of the pier

i had a turkey-avocado-cranberry sandwich that was divine with my oreo shake

we spent a lot of time playing cards and scrabble

i used to hate the family game of rook...that is until i got three perfect 100s this trip

we also spent a lot of time on the couch

which was a real treat when you're with your favorite people...all of them

i discovered that there's no better way to start thanksgiving than a day on the san onofre waves

my dad always pretends he doesn't like to carve the turkey

but we all know that he wouldn't let anyone else do it...and he secretly loves it

it was nice having thanksgiving dinner at a round table

...so much easier to get the food passed to my plate ASAP

on friday we had a bonfire on the beach and bonded with my parents, cousins, aunt, uncle, & grandma

my cousin rach and i started would you rather with the fam

i have the best grandma in the world who's always in for an adventure

i am so grateful for the thanksgiving holiday!

{OPTIMISM}

I've been somewhat of a negasaurus lately. The stress of upcoming final papers, projects, and exams coupled with the freezing cold weather have been generous contributors to my attitude. Thanks to my dear friend Colie, I'm making a transformation. She recently posted a reference to a talk given by Gordon B. Hinckley in 1996.

(i'VE GOT THIS LISTED NEXT DOOR IN MY SIDE BAR SO IT'S REMEMBERED AT THE TOP OF MY BLOG...BUT IT'S THE SAME.)

"I am asking that we stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. I am suggesting that as we go through life we “accentuate the positive.” I am asking that we look a little deeper for the good, that we still voices of insult and sarcasm, that we more generously compliment virtue and effort. I am not asking that all criticism be silenced. Growth comes of correction. Strength comes of repentance. Wise is the man who can acknowledge mistakes pointed out by others and change his course.

What I am suggesting is that each of us turn from the negativism that so permeates our society and look for the remarkable good among those with whom we associate, that we speak of one another’s virtues more than we speak of one another’s faults, that optimism replace pessimism, that our faith exceed our fears. When I was a young man and was prone to speak critically, my father would say: “Cynics do not contribute, skeptics do not create, doubters do not achieve (fromEnsign, Apr. 1986, 2–4).

i'm grateful for my family

i got so grateful for my family that i threw in the towel on blogging about it and went to california for thanksgiving! it was such a treat. it was really sad to spend thanksgiving away from my sister heidi for the second year in a row. she's such a good little mom in virginia and she was thoroughly missed.

i feel really grateful to be alive and to have a family that i really love and that loves me. we spent ten days there with people coming and going. i love my extended family and couldn't have spent thanksgiving in a better way unless heidi could have been there. i'm grateful for the sunshine, i'm grateful for the beach, the sand, the waves and the ocean air.

washington dc...august 2009

i LOVED washington dc! i can't believe i had never been there. it was so overwhelming because there was so much to see and so much i wanted to do in so little time. i couldn't do it all, so i'll have to go back someday.

so i took a bolt bus from nyc to dc and it was so cheap and perfect. i usually get car sick if i read on the road, but my book was so good that i had to read on the way. i finished the book the guernsey literary potato peel pie society without even getting ill. if you haven't read it...you really should. definitely one of my favorites ever.

NOVEMBER IS MY FAVORITE MONTH OF THE YEAR...and thanksgiving is my very favorite holiday.
i love to be grateful.
i love my family.
i love to eat.

so...as suggested by my sister heidi, i am going to be blogging about things that i'm grateful for each day in november. my favorite thanksgiving tradition is recording as many things i'm grateful for as the digit of the date...except the trick is without repeating any. it's so fun and it changes my perspective in everything i do. it makes me more positive and optimistic and happy.
there's nothing more uplifting than a grateful heart.

i suggest that you all do the same...and blog about it because it's fun to read what other people are thankful for.

here's to another summer time recap. i started a little east coast trip with a stop in new york city. it was a real treat.

i stayed with one of my best friends from high school...alison vance

she did a summer musical theatre program at circle in the square

i sure enjoyed the metropolitan museum...even though it's EXPEN$IVE

it rained a little bit...but i love the rain

and i love to sew...it was kind of necessary that i be alone on this trip

because there are few people patient enough to take time to do my kinds of things...like the fashion district

...anthropologie...

it is amazing and huge and beautiful in nyc

lucky you, it's my third post of today and i'm going to tell you about my day.

i woke up after having a delightfully weird dream time-traveling with quinny. we switched off being giants and midgets each time we traveled. weird. it's getting really cold outside with the snow and all, so i laid in bed and read all morning.

i was almost out the door to go to the library...until a knock came to my door and it was scott and mo. they convinced me to abort all responsibilities of the day and we went to park city! it was so fun...it made me wish i could get a season pass and spend more time up there. we just played all day and scouted out the "outlets" where nothing is really on sale and ate at davanza's pizza right under the town lift. yesterday was the first snowfall of the season and i loved it. i love fresh snowy air, it was particularly nice up in park city where a just a few flakes graced my eyes. i came home and went to a triathlon club meeting, which i adored, but had to leave early to attend wednesday weekly, courtesy of cook emily howe with a delicious meal. ww=my weekly dinner group with some of my most precious peeps. my sweet visiting teacher alex evans came over and lifted my cheery spirit and then i had a nice phone chat with my bff cass and my bcf {best cousin forever...if you don't understand my lingo} rach. and i've been really busy pretending to write a research paper ever since.

i was feeling way jealous this weekend because my sisters are together in virginia and i was stuck in provo. but my jealousy was evaporated when my mom came down today. it was so fun and so nice of her to offer to come down and take me to lunch. what a pleasant surprise. my mom is the greatest.

this weekend i did a 5k with jake for the accounting program. it was free and way fun...until i got a little ill and ended up being the last to cross the finish line. just my luck. i have decided that running is the most humbling sport because if you get injured or sick, you have to stop. if you choose not to, you throw up. at least that's how it is in my case. the occasional stomach pains i have seem to always come out when i'm running...last time this happened, i threw up so i didn't want it to happen again in a public arena. i still like running, even though i'm usually the slowest one, sick or not.

right now i'm studying for my m com 320 grammar exam. a friend in my class just took it and got 56 percent, so i feel two things: no matter what as long as i get at least 57, i'm okay; or this is going to be dang hard so i better study hard. i like studying grammar, which is weird. but after learning all the nit-picky things, it's hard not to notice grammatical errors everywhere i go.

i'm so excited for conference. it's going to be so great, i love conference. i'm trying to do different things than the norm to prepare...i've tried to read the may ensign of april conference 2009. it's hard, because it's long...but it has been so good. the talks were amazing and i've re-learned things that i really wish i had remembered. i also thought of a new idea to "prepare" and that is trying to predict what they are going to say and live my life accordingly, trying to make habits before i'm told to, so it will be easier when they say it.

i hope everyone takes the time to watch it.

so i think i already said this...but for a few of my classes, we have to "engage in social media." i now use twitter and feel like a total loser. my sisters and i have a good time reading people's facebook status updates and laughing at what people choose to share with the world. (please don't take offense...) but it's funny when people make comments on how "wonderful their hubby wubby is for making breakfast in bed this morning" and stuff like that... one of my recent favorites was "first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in a baby carriage. i'm pregnant. :) telling everyone she was "prego" over facebook or people love to talk about how great or hungover they are. i update too...on occasion...so i really shouldn't even be talking. but it's still funny.

parts of me would rather have a little private blog for my valiant readers. other parts of me want to make a public one for the m com assignment i have to blog. the latter parts of me are too lazy to do so. i created this blog for the sole purpose of being informative to my faraway family members...now it's public domain. so enjoy...

well...my blog is going to make a large transformation in the coming months because it's gonna explode with comments. TWO because all my professors are requiring us to post on a "blog," as if it is a new thing. i am sooooo above the times. "it's time for us to start engaging in social media." HA HA. so all my sweetheart professors are going to be reading my posts...and my classmates are going to be reading too. what a treat. i would make a new blog for all of that...but i already have this gem, so i figured i better keep it. so, let's enjoy our privacy while we have it.

obviously, school started this week. it was my third day today and i had a 5-page paper due and a reading quiz in all four of my classes. yikes. woot woot...they're not wasting any time.

BAM Triathlon...Saturday, June 13, 2009

on june 13, 2009 i did my first open-water lake triathlon.

the battle at midway, hence the "BAM" was one of the highlights of my summer. it was so fun to do the race in the neighborhood of my cabin and it was soooo scenic.

the funniest surprise was when i was reading the race info the night before and i casually noticed that the bike portion was twice as long as i thought it was. haha...

this video is embarrassing, but i posted it because you can tell by how bad i'm shaking how psyched i was...

this doesn't describe how necessary the nerves were...it was a long, scary and cold swim...but so fun and i finished the swim much quicker than i anticipated.

best news: i didn't drown

here's a full frontal view for you in my sexy wetsuit, which i was grateful for because deer creek was still pretty cold. i felt really dizzy after the swim, as you can tell by my lack of balance.

here i am coming out of T1 for the bike portion,

reading the double length of the bike portion wasn't as funny after mile 22, but the course was beautiful around the lake and through the city of midway and up to soldier hollow.

the BAM course was really scenic and beautiful, especially the run. the run was definitely the hardest for me, especially since it was 100% hills, but the view was worth it.

the last 500 feet or more to the finish line was all up hill...but so rewarding

as you can tell

i was pretty happy at the end, one because i was finished, but two because it was over

and the essence of my emotions...i couldn't be happier.

my family was the sweetest. they cheered me on through the whole thing and drove beside me for parts of the bike. em even came to run with me during the hills at the end.

so...i heard about this cruise like a week before its departure, but i couldn't resist the opportunity. i went with my friend katie alder whom i met in one of my classes and some boys i met at utah lake last summer. we also met some of katie's friends there...and found that there were like fifty people from byu on the cruise.

michael jackson died yesterday, 2:26 p.m.

this is epic. he was the king of pop, and an icon of my childhood.

as my closest pals know. i like to listen to music. i like good lyrics and songs that make me happy. but let's face it: music is not my thing. i don't know any songs. and i don't know who sings what. i don't buy cds. i don't know how to work itunes. and i don't care.

but i know michael jackson, and i recognize his music...so it's a sad day to lose him.

i have a few memories of this cool guy....

i used to have dreams about him...one time (this was literally 10+ years ago, i don't know how i remember this) i had a nightmare and it was way scary. i don't even remember any details, except that MJ was in it and he was the hero that saved me, so he's got a special place in my heart.

in middle school with my sweet friends emily green and cass fitt and i honestly can't remember who else, we choreographed a dance to "black or white" in the school bathroom while other weirdos were piercing their ears and belly buttons with apples. haha

i used to steal my sister heidi's 2-in-1 gold cd and dance in my room.

free willy is one of my favorite past times. enough said.

three years ago...i graduated from high school. my fellow graduees remember a great, happy and carefree day. i on the other hand, spent the day finishing up the final touches on my graduation speech, arriving to the e-center and forgetting my national honor society rope, and crying as i stood in line because i was so scared to speak in front of 9,000+ people.

haha. i laugh about it now, but "finishing up the final touches" in this context means, i began writing my speech that morning, or maybe the night before.

i'm glad i can finally laugh about it because as i was reminded at church yesterday, everyone is supposed to have weaknesses...and i guess that's mine. i procrastinate. i forget. i stress out. but the good thing about time is that you grow and learn how to overcome your weaknesses. i still procrastinate. i still forget crucial things. and i still stress out...but now, three years later i know what to expect and i can laugh about it how clueless i can be and i am happy to be me.

i did it...i finished, and i still have a high school diploma to prove it.

(i still love milking any opportunity for "my choice," example: chef's table for my 21st birthday)

(that was a treat...i spent it with my middle school best friends ali siegfried and whit waltman)

*dealing with high school boy drama*

(i learned my lesson...)

*getting a speeding ticket on the way home, only #3*

so i finally got myself a husband. i love him more than anything in the world. we are so lucky to have each other, he treats me so well and i take pretty good care of him myself. i'm pretty sure i've never been happier. i have been wanting a husband to call my own for a long time and i finally found my perfect match. i spend more time with him than i do anyone else. i can't wait to spend our lives together in the miles and miles to come.

i bought him about two weeks ago. . .definitely the best purchase i've ever made. i just rode him on thursday for first time because i've been out of town, but i've already put 50 miles on him, and many more to go. i love the weather and the smell of springtime when i ride. it's so nice to finally have one to call my own, i've been waiting for him forever and now he's finally here...

so...as many of you know. it has been a long nine months for my family.

mostly for my oldest sister heidi, who has been pregnant with problems, puke, pain, and pessimism...but also long for those of us who had to see her suffer.

thanks to the "miracle" of castor oil that enduced heidi's pregnancy, sadie was born. that's disgusting, she's a nut. heid called me a few hours after the birth and i swear i have NEVER heard or felt more joy through the phone from her. I'm so so happy for her, and baby sade is such an angel!

best buddies 2009 talent show

so i know i'm late on the posts, but i've gotta go back in time for a sec because this event is priceless. right before finals last month, amy and i went to the last activity of the year...the best buddies talent show. it is always one of my favorite activities, but i missed last year's because i was in london.

so...there may be a few videos, and you will not regret watching any of them.

amy was feeling too shy to perform any talents, so we cooked some brownies for refreshments and we were even on the program for our brownie cooking talent! it was so much fun. she was so proud, and so was i.

of all the talents, this was definitely my favorite. i couldn't believe i caught it on tape...jamie sung his own version of josh groban's "you raise me up" and it was so adorable. i know it's kind of a long video, but you have to watch the whole thing because the end is priceless. amy was bawling at the end and it was so cute...she told me in the car that she was way embarrassed about all the attention in front of everybody though.

it is sad that best buddies is officially over for this semester...but amy and i still hang out, which is great...and i'm so glad i still live in provo so we can! she works at the local theatre so sometimes she take me to see movies. we saw 17 again just barely, a zac efron delight for you non-fans out there. amy is obsessed with him, so it's wonderful to have someone to share my same interest. haha. it really is such a good movie...i LOVED it.

critical mass + gallery stroll = first friday of the month and a happy girl

i love every first friday of the month in provo because it starts with critical mass and ends with the gallery stroll.

CRITICAL MASS

every first friday whoever wants to ride meets at 5:30p.m. at the courthouse to tour provo on bike and "take back the road." it's soooo much fun. sometimes 200-500+ people show up so cars can't even drive on the road. It has been kinda slim the last few months because in april it snowed, and in may it rained.

jeff and i rented a tandem for critical mass last month and this is the pic he got of me when i was steering in the front (tandems aren't as easy as they look!)

GALLERY STROLL

the gallery stroll is open from around 5-10p.m. and you just walk along the street and check out all the art galleries that are open late. they usually have delightful refreshments and cool art to peruse. there was even a vintage flea market that was part of the stroll last month, where i got quite a nice sweater.
